Traditional Design Canoes Complete Pacific Voyage

Six traditional Polynesian canoes recently completed their journey from various Pacific Islands to San Francisco. The voyage was organised to highlight the role traditional knowledge could play in protecting the ocean from environmental damage.

The canoes, or ‘Vaka Moanas’ to give them their traditional Polynesian name, travelled the equivalent of five times around the globe. They were constructed in New Zealand by Salthouse Builders, using traditional designs, but incorporating modern materials. SP-High Modulus became involved with the project by supplying materials to the build in the form of the innovative B³ SmartPac solution. The B³ SmartPac solution comprises of optimised structural design with pre-cut reinforcements and core materials, designed to reduce complexity and cost in production boatbuilding.

Some of the canoes will now continue the journey and travel down the US coast to San Diego before returning back across the Pacific.
