Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Best practice on the (COSHH) Control of Substances Hazardous to Health would suggest that the need for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be eliminated.

However, in reality PPE may be necessary in certain operations or in areas where vapour or liquid exposure is possible, or if it cannot be guaranteed that exposure is not adequately controlled.

Before PPE is selected a full assessment of the process involved should be made, ideally by a Health & Safety specialist.

The assessment should point to any control measures that can be implemented and also to identify and specify appropriate PPE. The choice of protective clothing and equipment should be based upon the properties of the particular product and the operation involved.

Training on the use and maintenance of the PPE should also be given. A facility for storing and cleaning PPE may also be required.

PPE is an important part of working safely with composites, PPE takes several forms including:

> Gloves

> Eye Safety Wear

> Respiratory Protection

Overalls
