Gurit nominated finalist in JEC Innovation Awards

Zurich, February 9, 2023 – Gurit is honoured to announce that it has been nominated for the 2023 JEC Innovation Awards in the Renewable Energy category.

Following a rigorous selection process from hundreds of submissions, Gurit is proud to be selected as one of three finalists in the Renewable Energy category for its ‘OptiCore’ design engineering software platform for wind turbine blade lightweighting currently under development. OptiCore enables more efficient core kits for wind blades – considering mechanical properties, geometrical fit, blade weight, resin uptake, manufacturing cost, and time-to-market.

Key benefits to the customer include improved first time fit for drapability and less iterations due to optimized core kitting. The software manages multiple variables where a human would struggle, as it is being developed to have the ability to explore multiple designs quickly and in parallel. This results in improved wind blade mechanical properties as well as overall cost and weight savings, ultimately contributing to shorter development time and further cost reduction for renewable wind energy generation. OptiCore achieves this through allowing a reduction in materials needed, mainly resin, thus reducing the environmental impact of resin production and disposal, as well as the weight of the finished blade.

For a permanently rotating structure over 20 years, this weight reduction has a very positive impact on additional energy production and reduced wear-and-tear on the wind turbine.
