Graduate Technical Support Engineer (Adhesives & Resins)

Site Overview
The Graduate Materials Engineer will be based at the Newport, Isle of Wight facility for the duration of the graduate programme, reporting to the BU Technical Support Manager with a day-to-day functional reporting line to the UK Site Manager The Newport site is focused on the delivery of Gurits’ Epoxy/Adhesives & Resin Products which are used in applications in multiple market segments that include Wind, Marine, Industrial and Transportation.
This location also has a strong R&D focus and is home to our Product Development teams, and our Laboratory and Testing team. As well as innovation these R&D functions also work closely with our Technical Support Team and in turn our Customer Support and Sales functions ensuring that that our customers’ needs are our priority.
Some Group Support and BU Wind functions also reside in Newport and remotely across the UK along with our EMEA Structural Engineering team, directly supporting customer innovation in multiple market segments.
Role Description
The role involves significant laboratory work, including the manufacture of test coupons and the completion of analytical testing to generate robust market data on epoxy adhesives and resins. The individual will work closely with colleagues across the Newport site to develop a strong understanding of the epoxy adhesives and resins business, its products, and underlying technologies. In addition, the role will provide technical support to sales teams, contributing to technical discussions on formulated products and undertaking occasional travel to customer sites as required. Structured training will be provided throughout the programme, with regular guidance and support from a designated training owner during key development phases
Purpose of the Department Function
The Graduate Technical Support Engineer undertakes structured training in composite material testing and adhesive and resin product ranges to develop the capability to deliver first-line technical expertise to support customers and sales while interfacing with internal teams. The role is responsible for benchmarking products, assisting with product issues and troubleshooting, and ensuring timely and effective resolution whilst building strong technical expertise.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Testing & Data Generation
• Manufacture composite test coupons in line with defined standards and procedures
• Conduct analytical testing on materials
• Accurate recording, analysing, and interpreting test results
• Ensure all lab work complies with HSE and quality requirements
Technical Analysis & Reporting
• Prepare technical reports summarising test outcomes and key findings
• Support the generation of product data sheets and technical documentation
• Contribute to building and maintaining reliable product performance data
Product & Application Understanding
• Develop knowledge of epoxy adhesives and resins, materials, and technologies
• Understand how products are used in marine, industrial and wind applications
• Support internal teams in applying materials appropriately to customer needs
• Research and benchmark products against competitors in the market
Technical Support Activities
• Provide first-line support to internal teams (sales, operations, product development)
• Assist in troubleshooting product or process issues
• Escalate complex technical issues to senior engineers/managers when required
Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Work closely with lab, product development, operations, quality, and technical support teams
• Support communication between technical and commercial functions
• Participate in team meetings and project reviews
Customer & Commercial Support
• Support sales teams in technical discussions on products
• Assist in preparing technical information for customer enquiries
• Participate in occasional customer visits to support product applications (where required)
Continuous Learning & Development
• Complete structured practical training in testing methods, materials, and systems in respect of our adhesives and resins ranges with production and process engineering.
• Complete individual technical projects and create test plans to provide suitable market data.
• Build competency to operate independently in lab and technical support tasks
• Gain an understanding of competing products available in the composites and adhesives market.
Skills & Experience
• Degree level qualification in engineering or other physical science.
• Experience of composite materials is desirable by not essential
• Previous experience of industry is desirable, e.g. University placements or summer employment
• Strong understanding of materials science principles (particularly composites, adhesives, resins)
• Confidence and ability to give professional presentations, adapting style and content to be appropriate for differing audiences.
• Clear and concise report writing.
• Ability to analyse, review and report information in a concise and easily understandable format.
• Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams (lab, production, quality, sales etc.)
• Proactive approach to learning new materials, processes and technologies.
