When Performance Counts: Gurit Presents Advanced Composite Materials for the Automotive and Defence Industry at Composites Europe 2014

7th October 2014, Gurit (SIX Swiss Exchange: GUR) a leading global supplier of advanced composite materials, engineering, tooling and composite components launches its latest product innovations for the automotive and defence industry at Composites Europe 2014, Messe Düsseldorf, Germany, stand B12 (Hall 8B).

Press Moulding Technology

The press moulding of composites is becoming more commonplace and Gurit is assisting this growth by offering SE/ST 160/200 prepreg based products suitable for various press moulding applications. Gurit’s advanced resin chemistry has resulted in resin that can be cycled hot in, hot out with cure times less than 15 minutes. These resins can be used for the economic production of cosmetic and structural automotive applications.

Cosmetic Carbon

Gurit’s range of cosmetic grade prepregs SC 110 and SC 160, utilise high clarity, versatile, hot-melt epoxy resin formulation. These unique formulations ensure that no dicy ‘white-wash’ or spots are evident in the cured resin, reducing scrap rate by up to 20%. It is ideal for manufacturing of visual quality components using autoclave and press processing.

Structural Epoxy Prepreg

SE 200 is Gurit’s high strength toughened epoxy system and has been developed to enable rapid part manufacture through a number of composite processing methods. SE 200 structural prepreg can be used in the making of parts such as structural lower tubs, bulkheads, front and rear scuttles, gearbox tunnels and other structural components.

High Temperature Prepreg

Gurit’s SE 300 is an ideal prepreg resin for high temperature composite applications, with temperature performance in excess of 300°C. SE 300 is ideal for applications in composite structures, which are exposed to very high temperature for short durations.

Ballistic Protection Prepreg

For the ballistic and defence market, laminates provide effective ballistic protection at a much lower weight than metallic armor materials. The need to reduce the weight of armored vehicles has led to a large volume of composites being used in this area. Gurit’s PF 700 has been developed with this in mind. PF 700 is:

  • Leading to up to 50% lighter panels when compared to steel
  • Suitable for press moulding for production of flat panels
  • Suitable for autoclave for complex shapes
  • Approved by AGY, meets HJ1 qualification
  • Conforms top US Military specification MIL-DTL-64154B

Staff from Gurit’s sales and technical teams are available on the stand to discuss the latest products and projects. To find out more visit stand B12 (Hall 8B).
