Boat Builds Made Faster and Lighter Using Gurit Composite Solutions

May 15, 2014, Gurit (SIX Swiss Exchange: GUR), a leading global manufacturer and supplier of Composite Materials, Systems and Engineering, and well established within the Asia Pacific marine sector, will be showcasing its latest product innovations and engineering capabilities at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in Queensland, Australia, from Thursday 22nd to Sunday 25th May 2014. Visitors are invited to discover how composite materials can result in time and cost savings for their marine projects.

Gurit’s composite solutions have established applications across various industry sectors globally, including aerospace, automotive, construction, transportation, ocean and wind energy. The company’s roots, however, lie in the marine sector and boatbuilding industry. In addition to round the world race yachts and America’s Cup campaigns, and a large customer base including Riviera and Palm Beach Motor Yachts, Gurit’s leading edge products have also been used by boat owners and home boat builders for maintenance, repairs and construction for over 30 years.

PVC foam core material making boats lighter

When striving for optimal performance and racing capability, weight reduction is critical and requires a smart choice of materials in the primary boat structure. Gurit specialists will be available at the Show to discuss how using Gurit’s high-performance structural core materials can address this issue, with solutions including a PVC foam recently launched into the Australia market.  Gurit® PVC provides superior strength to weight ratio, with other key features including outstanding chemical resistance, negligible water absorption, and excellent thermal insulation capabilities.

Hi-Panels making boat building easier and faster

Gurit will also be exhibiting its Hi-Panel composite panel solution suitable for one-off boat builds and offering proven time savings. Resin infused core sandwich panels, manufactured by Gurit, are custom cut to shapes provided and supplied to the customer as finished panels. Hi-Panel has been successfully used in the primary structures of a range of boats, including the Origami 6.3m launch Sumo, the Marc Deborde 78ft power catamaran IETA, and the Stimson 56ft sailing monohull Alcedo, with reported advantages including ease and speed of build, reduced set up and labour costs, and high quality construction of composite parts.

Comprehensive range of composite solutions with local customer support
In addition to its PVC foam and Hi-Panel solutions, Gurit will also be showcasing and explaining the benefits its customers are experiencing from its range of other core materials, as well as pre-impregnated materials, epoxy laminating resins, adhesives and repair kits. The company’s leading edge products are complemented with high quality customer support from its global network of offices and distributors, including offices in Auckland and Sydney, as well as five distributor companies in Australia.
